Obedience Isn’t Just For Our Kids | Obedience .01

Obedience. That’s an outdated word, right? But really, our questions in motherhood about where to send our kids to school, what to feed them, and even how we spend our time and money, boils down to this. We don’t want to fail, so we wonder what to obey, how to obey, and how to keep going when we stumble. Essentially, we want to know what it looks like to live ‘Risen Motherhood’—to do all things in a way that please God. This is what we’re exploring in our new mini-series. In the first episode, Emily and Laura tackle these questions and explain why obedience brings freedom. We want to be good moms, and obedience to Christ’s commands is the place to start.

Want to help Risen Motherhood keep creating the content you know and love?

For this mini-series, we’re giving you a free five-day Bible study, Love Keeps You by Courtney Reissig, designed to supplement what we’re working through on the podcast. Jesus says, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments” (John 14:15). But what does keeping his commandments even look like?

We know we love Jesus. We want to obey. But how? This short Bible study walks you through Jesus’ last words to his disciples in John 13-17. They had questions about obedience too. Thankfully, Jesus gives the answers we all need.

  • Sign-up for our email list and you’ll get this Bible study sent right to your inbox!

  • The Bible study includes 5 days of study, a short devotional with a motherhood application, and a verse to read and apply with your kids!

R|M Apply Questions:

  1. What comes to mind when you think about the word “obedience?” Are your thoughts positive or negative?

  2. Laura and Emily talked about how we’re all obeying someone or something. Of the things they mentioned (culture, other moms/social media, micro-cultures) which are you most tempted to obey? Why do you think that is the case?

  3. In the example of the fence Emily talked about, she said that the fence is like the commands to obey. They protect us from harm. How have you seen obedience be a “fence” of protection in your own life?

  4. Learning obedience is also a lot like pulling weeds in a garden. When you pull up the larger weeds, you make room to pull the smaller ones. Can you think of a time in your life when you didn’t pull up “weeds” of sin growing in your heart? What happened?
