Ep. 149 || “Mom, stop looking at your phone!”

Being a mom can feel isolating. Our children may be our constant companions, but we often long to interact with other adults, and social media can be a fun and easy way to connect. But with statistics showing that the average person spends 2.5 hours a day on social media, we’re wise to consider how it affects our ability to live out the calling of motherhood. In this episode, Emily and Laura discuss how social media is designed to draw us in and how it might influence our hearts and actions more than we may realize. They offer practical boundaries for social media use and encourage us to consider whether that use of  time is beneficial to our growth in Christ. It’s important for Christians to be present on social media, but we don’t want our presence there to come at the cost of loving God and others.

R|M Apply Questions:

  1. How can understanding the way social media and other apps are designed, help you become a wiser and more intentional user?

  2. Social media isn’t the cause of our sin, but it can provide an environment that nurtures our sin. How do you see that play out in your own heart? What sins do you tend to struggle with as you use social media?

  3. As you prayerfully consider the frequency of your social media use and the content of your feeds, what changes might be wise for you to make? Who might you turn to for accountability?

  4. As Paul says in 1 Corinthians 10:23, “‘All things are lawful,’ but not all things are helpful. ‘All things are lawful,’ but not all things build up.” What might it look like for you to use social media in a way that is helpful and that builds you and others up?

  5. Social media can have many benefits, but only God has the power to change us and make us more like Christ. How might you reallocate some of the time you spend on social media and instead intentionally pursue growing in the Lord? What might it look like to make the best use of your time?
