Prayer 01: Don’t Wait

Why is it so hard to pray? We know prayer is essential, but like the discipline of healthy eating, we turn to the chips instead of the veggies. We choose the quick fix, rather than the thing that sustains. In the first episode of our mini-series on prayer, Emily and Laura talk about our common struggles with prayer, the benefits of this essential habit, and why prayer is possible right now..Prayer keeps our eyes on the Lord, changing our lives today and generations to come—why wait? Listen in to hear the many ways prayer benefits you and how prayer has been part of God’s plan for his people from the beginning!

For this mini-series we’ve got the much requested printable for Kitchen Sink Prayers! Last summer, we launched Kitchen Sink Prayers to encourage the R|M community to cultivate a life of prayer. The idea is that each time we’re at a kitchen sink—whether washing hands or dishes, rinsing fruit, or filling a water bottle in the breakroom—we pray. As something that most of us visit several times a day, a kitchen sink can prompt a regular rhythm of prayer in our lives. We took those prayers, added some new ones, and packaged them into a free printable. Plus, we can’t forget the kids! Included in the download are a few fun tools for you to help teach your children how to pray.

  • 30 Different Kitchen Sink Prayer Cards, each card includes a topic, verse, and several prayer prompts.

  • Two Prayer printables to enjoy with your kids, including the Five Finger Prayers and a Prayer Chain

R|M Apply Questions:

  1. Of all the spiritual disciplines, prayer is one of the hardest for many of us. Is this true in your life? Why or why not?

  2. Emily and Laura talk about prayer as “doing battle.” What “weapons” are you tempted to grab first when it comes to battling sin in your own life?

  3. What practical step can you take today to begin modeling a life of prayer for your kids?

  4. “The point of prayer is not to change circumstances. It’s to change you.” How have you seen prayer change you or change your will to God’s will?

  5. Emily and Laura mention multiple benefits of prayer. Which one have you seen in your own life? Which one do you want to see in your own life? Pray for God to increase your desire to pray and to bring these benefits to light in your own life and relationship with him.
