Social Media 02: When It Makes You Mad

We’ve all been there. We’re innocently scrolling through social media and then we feel a tinge of guilt, anger, or sadness. We get on social media to relax or escape from the world, and find ourselves feeling worse than ever. Cancel culture. Shame. Outrage. Judgement. Where does this all come from? How do we deal with it? In this episode of the podcast, Emily and Laura talk through all the feelings that social media brings up for us and how we process what faithful response looks like online. The only perfect person—Jesus. We won’t feel worse than ever when we spend our days looking at him.

As a part of our Social Media mini-series, we’re digging deep into the impact of social media—on our brains, bodies, and hearts. In light of this, we’ve created “Wake Up! A Social Media Workbook.” This podcast companion helps you take Laura and Emily’s conversations further and apply them to your own life. In the workbook, you’ll find Scripture, questions, and a prayer relating to each episode. We encourage you to follow along week by week, completing the questions for each topic after the corresponding episode’s release.

This mini-series is brought to you in part by Crossway, publisher of Deeper: Real Change for Real Sinners by Dane Ortlund. This book reminds us that we grow in Christ by going deeper into the gospel truths that first saved us. Drawing on wisdom from people in church history, Ortlund reminds readers to fix their eyes on Jesus in their battle against sin, living in light of his grace and their identity in him. R|M Apply Questions:

Verse 1: Proverbs 26:12 “Do you see a man who is wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him.”

Wake Up:

  • What expectations do you bring to social media? What needs or wants are you hoping it will fulfill? (If possible, list a specific example of a time when you hoped a friend, influencer, or ministry would give you something. How did their content line up with your hopes and expectations?)

  • What emotions are provoked when you use social media? List some of those emotions and what specifically provoked them. Do you notice any patterns?

Verse 2: Matthew 12:36 “I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak.”

Wisdom:

  • As Christians, we’re to exhibit the fruit of the Spirit, online or off. What does Christian accountability look like? As a believer, who are you accountable to, and who is accountable to you?

  • Someday, we will give an account for every word spoken, even those not uttered aloud or typed online. Are there things you need to confess and ask God to forgive? How can you “go and sin no more” in this area?

Walk in His Ways:

Father, remind me that social media will never meet my deepest needs—only you can. Protect me from the temptation of unkindness and judgment towards those who share content online. Guard my thoughts and words, transforming my heart towards generosity and charity, and give me wisdom as I engage online.
