Whole 06: Creativity is Not a Luxury—It's For Moms, Too

It doesn’t take long for our heads to start spinning when we think about how creative God is: a sea of textures and colors, a sunset bursting in shades of light, a cool night sky speckled with stars… we could go on and on. As image-bearers, we too are wired with an ability to create—even if it feels we lack the time, talent, or desire to do so. In this episode, Emily and Laura look at the many ways creativity can come to life in motherhood, as well as a few practical ways we can make space to create, even if you don’t necessarily think of yourself as “creative.” Let us set our minds on what is true, pure, and lovely (Phil. 4:8)—and revel in the work of our Creator with every step.

Whole: Reflection and Prayer Journal

We’ve got your wheels turning, now it’s your turn to pray through and reflect on how each week’s topic could apply to your own day-to-day life. Let this journal be your safe place to think outside of your typical bounds, get a little creative, and write bold prayers.

Friendly reminder, mom to mom: every season of motherhood looks different, especially in terms of capacity! If you’re up all night with a newborn right now, “creativity” may look completely different than if you have school-aged kiddos. Give yourself grace and know you can print this journal out again and again, season by season!

R|M Apply Questions:

  • Do you consider yourself creative? Why or why not? Spend some time reflecting on the ways that God made you to reflect his image, looking at the creation account in Genesis 1. How can the work of your hands today honor him, whether you’re picking up a paintbrush or working in a spreadsheet?

  • Think about your day-to-day rhythms. Can you take an extra five minutes to set the table beautifully, dabble in watercolor during naptime, or write a short story after bedtime? (This is a great time to jump back to your interests and passions list from Ep. 1—what can you pursue from this list, even if it’s in baby steps?)

  • The next time your kids are coloring at the kitchen table or bring home a school project assignment, challenge yourself to intentionally embrace the creative opportunity before you. How does it feel to make something holistic from what was a pile of separate items or ingredients? What does it remind you about God’s character?

  • Read Philippians 4:8. Spend some time in prayer that the Lord will open your eyes to the moments around you that beckon you to see what is true, pure, and lovely, and that you might see how he’s making you more like Christ as you do.
