Whole 08: Moms Just Wanna Have Fun—On Being Brave

Mom, when’s the last time you had FUN? For so many good reasons, our tendency as moms can be to stay behind the scenes and keep the trains running on time. We know this is a big responsibility, and we go all-in on taking it seriously. But what if we let our hair down a bit, and experienced the joy of a motherhood rooted in Christ? In this show, Emily and Laura remind us that as whole women of God, we can experience joy, laughter, thrills, and fun—knowing that in Christ, we’re not as fragile as we may feel. When we set our fears down and remind ourselves that God—not mom—is our family’s refuge, strength, and protector, the goodness that awaits on the other side may just take us (and our kiddos) by surprise.

Whole: Reflection and Prayer Journal

We’ve got your wheels turning, now it’s your turn to pray through and reflect on how each week’s topic could apply to your own day-to-day life. Let this journal be your safe place to think outside of your typical bounds, get a little creative, and write bold prayers.

Friendly reminder, mom to mom: every season of motherhood looks different, especially in terms of capacity! If you’re up all night with a newborn right now, “creativity” may look completely different than if you have school-aged kiddos. Give yourself grace and know you can print this journal out again and again, season by season!

R|M Apply Questions:

  • What areas of life are you often inclined to answer “no” without really thinking about the question at hand? Prayerfully consider if your “no’s” are more often out of fear or wisdom, and ask God to graciously grow you in this.

  • Read Proverbs 17:22. Would you consider your heart “joyful” in this season? If so, praise the Lord! If not, what is weighing on you that makes joy hard to find? Spend some time journaling through your season of life and maybe even sharing this with a friend who can encourage and pray for you.*

  • What is one thing you can do this week that might feel like a risk? As Emily and Laura mentioned in the show, maybe it’s as simple as playing a no-holds-barred game of tag in your house. Maybe it’s getting a bike of your own and joining the kids in the cul-de-sac the next time they take a ride. What is something you may typically say “no” to, that instead you could venture a “yes” and trust God with what happens next?

  • Go back to your list of passions and interests that you wrote out for Ep. 1. Do any of these feel like a risk to pursue? Are there any you left off of that list because they felt too far-fetched? Consider pushing yourself to take even a small step forward on something that may feel a little uncomfortable. (You can do it, mom!)

*We understand some of you may be walking through deep seasons of grief, and these prompts may feel tough or even out-of-touch with what you’re experiencing. We want to encourage you that even the act of getting up and walking through your day-to-day right now might be the most joyful thing you can do—and Christ will meet you in that, friend.
