Prayer 04: Wisdom From Ruth Chou Simons

We believe prayer is important—even necessary—but where do we even begin? Listen in as Laura chats with a seasoned mom of six boys (yes, six!). You may know Ruth Chou Simons as the founder of Gracelaced and from her award-winning books. But we’re also thankful for her as one of the Risen Motherhood Board Members, so we’re excited to share her motherhood wisdom with you today! She gives her tips for making prayer part of your family routine, how to give your kids language for prayer, and so much more. You won’t want to miss this episode!

Want to help Risen Motherhood keep creating the content you know and love?

For this mini-series we’ve got the much requested printable for Kitchen Sink Prayers! Last summer, we launched Kitchen Sink Prayers to encourage the R|M community to cultivate a life of prayer. The idea is that each time we’re at a kitchen sink—whether washing hands or dishes, rinsing fruit, or filling a water bottle in the breakroom—we pray. As something that most of us visit several times a day, a kitchen sink can prompt a regular rhythm of prayer in our lives. We took those prayers, added some new ones, and packaged them into a free printable. Plus, we can’t forget the kids! Included in the download are a few fun tools for you to help teach your children how to pray.

  • 30 Different Kitchen Sink Prayer Cards, each card includes a topic, verse, and several prayer prompts.

  • Two Prayer printables to enjoy with your kids, including the Five Finger Prayers and a Prayer Chain

For a complete list of all our recommended articles and books on prayer, head over to our Prayer series page.

This mini-series is brought to you in part by Crossway, publisher of the ESV audio Bible read by award-winning modern hymn writer, Kristyn Getty. This word for word audio version of the full Bible brings God’s word to life in a fresh way. Listen in your car, in your home, or on the go. Stream it for free today at ESV.org or in the ESV Bible app for iOS and Android devices. You can also purchase the audio as a digital download for 50% off with your Crossway Plus account. R|M Apply Questions:

How did prayer and spiritual disciplines change for you once you had kids?

  1. Ruth talks about creating a lifestyle of prayer. Where have you seen prayer become routine in your family’s life? How can you make it more of a lifestyle?

  2. Read Psalm 103. How does this give us language for our prayers? Try praying this psalm with your kids.

  3. Can you think of a time where God’s answer for you or your child was “no.”? How did you respond? How would you respond after today’s episode?

  4. We talk to friends in a variety of ways. What are some ways you can talk to God as a family to make it more about the relationship?

  5. Think about where you live and the everyday activities you do with your children. How can you use these activities as a segway to prayers of thanksgiving? Write down attributes of God’s character you notice in those activities.
