What We’re Still Talking About 04: School Choice

God calls all of us to train our children up in the ways of the Lord (Prov. 22:6), but when our kids become school-age, our options for helping them learn subjects like math and reading abound. Should we send our kids to public school, enroll them in private school, or homeschool? Is there only one right way for all Christian families? In this episode, Emily and Laura revisit the topic of school choice, encouraging moms to thoughtfully evaluate risks, be invested in their education, and outline practical steps we can take as we determine the right fit for our kids’ schooling. There are a lot of voices out there that push us one way or another, but the gospel gives us freedom to prayerfully pursue what is right for our individual children and families.

R|M Apply Questions:

  • Spend some time thinking about where you are currently in your kids’ education: is kindergarten still a few years away, or are you gearing up to have a kid in high school? What concerns, questions, and reservations do you have when it comes to your kids’ schooling choice? (If you’re married, we recommend thinking through this with your husband!)

  • As you walk through your questions and concerns about school choice, consider if they apply to your child’s specific school. If you’re unsure, spend some time gathering resources and learning about your child’s school curriculum and teaching philosophies.

  • Read Colossians 1:17. Spend some time in prayer that the Lord would remind you and still your heart that he is over all things, and he holds all things together—including the lives and futures of your children.

  • If you feel fully content with your children’s school choice, praise the Lord for this gift! Here are a few next steps and questions you can consider as you support other moms in their school choice journey:

    • Pray for the students, parents, and teachers in your local communities, across all different schooling types, that they would come to know and love the Lord and he would be glorified in all things.

    • Have you ever been tempted to impose the school choice for your family on other moms? Consider how you can hold your preferences with open hands and encourage another mom as she prayerfully considers the best path for her family.

    • How can you be a cheerful giver (2 Cor. 9:7) in your current school setup? Maybe this looks like investing more intentionally in your homeschool co-op, seeking to personally know and love your children’s teachers, or joining the local school board. Pray that the Lord would reveal to you how you can honor him in this season.
