Whole 01: Who Are You, Really? Finding What You Lost in Motherhood

Was there a moment you realized motherhood had changed you? Or did it happen steadily, gradually, until one day you realized: I’m not who I was. For many of us, we can agree that motherhood rightfully requires much of us—but as the seasons of motherhood change, how do we hold our role as ‘mom’ alongside the whole woman God designed us to be? In this episode, Emily and Laura kick off a new mini-series with a look at Scripture to see how we lay down our lives for Christ and flourish as whole women of God. We’re going beyond the bounds of motherhood in this series, but here’s the beauty: as we embrace God’s design for us and give our lives wholly in allegiance to him, we will find ourselves growing in motherhood, too. Whether you’re brand-new to being a mom and it feels all-consuming or you’re in a season where you have time and capacity to cultivate other interests, there’s refuge in our Maker, who sees you, loves you, and is making you new.

Whole: Reflection and Prayer Journal

We’ve got your wheels turning, now it’s your turn to pray through and reflect on how each week’s topic could apply to your own day-to-day life. Let this journal be your safe place to think outside of your typical bounds, get a little creative, and write bold prayers.

Friendly reminder, mom to mom: every season of motherhood looks different, especially in terms of capacity! If you’re up all night with a newborn right now, “creativity” may look completely different than if you have school-aged kiddos. Give yourself grace and know you can print this journal out again and again, season by season!

R|M Apply Questions:

  • Spend some time thinking about or journaling the ways you’ve changed over the course of motherhood. (This will look different for everyone, but is a great starting point to dive deeper into the questions that follow!)

  • In the show, Emily and Laura talk about two “ditches” we may be tempted to fall into as Christian moms. The first is making our motherhood the supreme aim of our lives, pouring everything we have into our role and our children. . The second is holding motherhood at arm’s length, hesitant to let our role and the needs of our families dictate our day-to-day priorities. Do you have a tendency toward one or the other?

    • Pray that the Lord might give you a clear vision for how you can hold motherhood rightly alongside your other passions and responsibilities.

  • Throughout the series, we’ll talk about several ways we can pursue whole personhood as women made in the image of God. Before diving into each episode, think about a few passions or talents that you have—maybe it’s a hobby you loved before motherhood or a new activity you want to be brave enough to try. (Hang tight to this list, let’s revisit it in future shows!)

  • Read John 15:12-17. In the passage, Jesus reminds us that we were chosen and appointed by him, that we “should go and bear fruit.” How might the passions and interests he’s given you equip you for this calling?
