Whole 02: Understanding the Power of Awe (& How You Can Experience it Today)

You know the moments. They may not feel like they come often in the mundane moments of mom life, but many of us have been there: when the sight before you takes your breath away; when God’s creation makes your heart swell; when a song brings tears to your eyes. Down to the way he made our neurons to fire and our hearts to beat faster when captivated by pure beauty, we see that God designed us to experience awe. In this episode, Emily and Laura dive into how awe grows us as women of God, along with practical ways we can step back and reflect in awe, even in the busyness of caring for our children. By God’s grace, we can find ourselves in awe over the simplest of things he’s given us right here, right now.

Whole: Reflection and Prayer Journal

We’ve got your wheels turning, now it’s your turn to pray through and reflect on how each week’s topic could apply to your own day-to-day life. Let this journal be your safe place to think outside of your typical bounds, get a little creative, and write bold prayers.

Friendly reminder, mom to mom: every season of motherhood looks different, especially in terms of capacity! If you’re up all night with a newborn right now, “creativity” may look completely different than if you have school-aged kiddos. Give yourself grace and know you can print this journal out again and again, season by season!

R|M Apply Questions:

  • Can you recall a time when you found yourself in awe? Think back to even your childhood moments (or what you see through your child’s eyes today!), when you first looked up at the stars or thought you could reach the sky from a swingset. What did it feel like? Write down 2-3 emotions you feel thinking back to that moment, and hang onto them!

  • Do you find it hard to pause and allow yourself to experience awe in this season of motherhood? Let’s take it a level deeper: what do you think prevents you from taking time to pause and embrace the God-given moments of awe before you?

    • Consider a few ways that experiencing awe might encourage your family and kids over the next few weeks and months. (Psst! Totally fine to think longer-term, but we know that can feel overwhelming. Start small and keep going, if that’s what you need!)

  • In the show, Emily and Laura list out a few practical ways we can experience awe in our everyday moments of motherhood. Spend some time in prayer that the Lord will open your eyes to those seemingly simple moments throughout your day, drawing you near to him in awe.

  • In Ep. 1, we asked you to list out a few passions or talents you have—from a hobby you loved before motherhood to a new activity you want to be brave enough to try. It’s time to pull out this list, mom! Take a look through and consider if pursuing one of these might allow you to experience awe in our Creator. (Just a reminder here that the activity doesn’t have to be big or flashy to give you a sense of awe—that’s the beauty of our God!)
