Abundance 04: I Don’t Have Enough Patience—An Interview with Maryanne Challies Helms

In so many moments throughout the day, little hands and hearts demand our time and attention, but we can’t meet everyone’s needs. With the flutter of noise, we grow impatient, our fuse is cut short. But it’s not just these moments that try our long-suffering. Maybe it looks like wading through deep sorrow as you walk through suffering that won’t let up. Maybe you’re growing tired, because you expected your season of life to look different by now, but God still has you in the same place. If patience is a fruit of the Spirit dwelling in us (Gal. 5:22-23), why does it feel so hard to actually be patient? In this episode, Emily chats with her dear friend, Maryanne Challies Helms, on seeing the ways God is training us in patience through our everyday moments as moms. Be encouraged: whatever trial you’re facing today, God has planned it for your growth and his glory—he will not leave you to fight this battle alone.

Maryanne Helms is wife to Pat and mom to four young adult children. She is passionate about mentoring and discipling young women, and loves to see God's truths shape their hearts and lives. She loves to write, and finds Instagram to be a fun space in which to share what the Lord is teaching her as she practices raising older children. In her spare time, she loves to visit with her family, lead Bible studies and book clubs, and finds trail running an especially enjoyable hobby.

R|M Apply Questions:

  • In the show, Maryanne talks about the ways that our own expectations can lead to impatience. Are there “false promises” you’ve made to yourself about what you’re owed in parenting? Spend some time in prayer that the Lord would reveal those things to you, and ask that he’ll help you surrender your will and expectations to him.

  • Consider your own motherhood journey—whether you’re rocking your firstborn to sleep or have grown children, you’ve likely experienced moments of impatience. How has the Lord grown you through these moments? Can you see the ways he’s changing you as you navigate circumstances that test your patience?

  • So often, we focus on what it means for us to be patient toward our kids, spouse, and friends. (Psst! This is a good thing!) But mom, what does patience with yourself look like? Are there demands you’re putting on yourself that don’t make sense for this season of life?

  • What is pulling at your patience? Consider journaling through your day and note when you feel particularly impatient. Is it shortly after a scroll through social media? When naptime doesn’t go as planned? When an unexpected work email comes through? Pray that the Lord will help you to identify these moments as they come, and that his Spirit will drive you toward him in prayer instead of losing your patience.
