Ep. 173 || Knowing Your Limits with Hannah Anderson

We know we should be grateful for the gifts God has given us in motherhood. But instead, we may find ourselves battling discontentment, anxiety, and stress over our inability to keep up with even the simplest tasks. In this episode, Emily and Laura talk with author Hannah Anderson about her book Humble Roots. Hannah applies gospel-truth to challenging topics like postpartum body image, vocational or ministry calling, and dealing with the temptation to live for our ideal version of motherhood instead of God's plan for us. This conversation is candid, challenging, and leaves much to be considered as Hannah offers an opportunity for weary moms to rest by accepting their limitations and letting God be God.

R|M Apply Questions:

  1. Hannah explains humility as recognizing that we’re not God. What might it look like for you to live in light of this truth? How might you find freedom to rest in the Lord by letting God be God?

  2. Who or what do you tend to compare yourself to and model yourself after? Is it a particular person, a group, a social media influencer or platform? Instead, how might you respond to Christ’s call: “Come to me, take my yolk, learn from me”?

  3. Hannah points out that the limitations of our bodies can either lead us to shame or to dependence on Christ. What aspects of your body’s limitations do you feel shame about? How might you allow those limitations to lead you into greater dependence on Christ?

  4. What encouragement do you find in knowing that Christ inhabited a physical body that was marred like ours, yet he was not ashamed of his scars?

  5. There is often a difference between our idea of the ideal woman and mother, and who God actually made us to be. What might you be striving after that isn’t aligned with how God made you and the life that he’s given you? What aspects of yourself and your life do you need to embrace and use for God’s glory? What expectations or visions for your life do you need to lay down before the Lord and submit to his calling?
