Every Hour We Need Thee

Today I'm reminded of how far I am from being a good mother, a good friend, a good wife / sister / daughter / church member / volunteer – a good anything! I feel split in two, like I live in the in-between. I want to do better, oh how I long to do better. But the needs keep coming at me and I fail over and over again. I just can't seem to get it together.

At times, it can feel pretty bleak. Why can I not live out what I know, I know? If I have Christ, why do I sometimes feel lost? If I know his promises are true, why do I act like they don't exist?

And so when I'm exasperated, when I'm shocked by my own sin, when I am at the end of my rope, I stop, remember the cross and sing:

I need Thee, oh, I need Thee;
Every hour I need Thee;
Oh, bless me now, my Savior!
I come to Thee.

I sing it so much my son sings this song to me when he thinks I'm sad. With a tentative voice, and two keys higher than mine he'll look right at me and sing,

I need Thee, oh, I need Thee;
Every hour I need Thee;
Oh, bless me now, my Savior!
I come to Thee.

I can't do it on my own because I was never meant to. I need Christ to sustain me, not my own efforts. Every day, every hour, every minute, he gives me my very life. And the beautiful thing is he doesn't just sustain me at bare minimum, no he fills me with life abundantly! He gives me all I need in every moment.

If you're like me, your story is a story of someone who needs her Savior every hour, who wrestles with doing bad and doing good and finds the gospel right in the middle of the struggle. The tug and pull - one side shows our need for our Savior, the other side shows us the grace we've been given from our Savior.

The struggle is how we know this truth: Every hour we need Thee.
