Ep. 133 || Summer Expectations: Setting Our Sights on Grace

At the beginning of June, you reveal your summer bucket list, which makes your children cheer with anticipation. By July, you can’t find your list and by August, you’re tempted to check out until a new season starts. It’s no surprise we need the gospel to shape every expectation we have as we think about our summer plans. In this episode, Emily and Laura look towards the next three months and offer challenges to help us keep the right perspective as we plan, hope, and dream for summertime. We’re living for something much bigger than our summer plans, and God’s grace will sustain us as we persevere in motherhood—and to September.

R|M Apply Questions:

  1. Summer is almost here, so let’s brainstorm what expectations we have for the next few months. What kind of goals, plans, or hopes do you have? What dangers or temptations do you foresee if plans go awry? How do your plans help your family obey the Great Commission and greatest commandments?

  2. Let’s think to June’s challenge: we live for something eternal. While summer can be fun and a time to do special things, we never want to forget we’ve been called to love and serve others. What specific things can your family do to love your neighbors this summer?

  3. July is the month for grace. Have you ever felt the summer doldrums? Everyone seems a little ungrateful and in need of a nap. In light of God’s grace to you in Christ, how can you be gracious to your kiddos? What verse can you memorize to remind you of the never-ending grace we have in Jesus?

  4. We all know what we need in August: perseverance. The final stretch before the fall rhythm picks up can feel the longest. It’s easy to think the change of pace will make things easier, but it won’t. Why don’t our circumstances produce joy? How is God the steadfast source of joy?

  5. We’ll miss you guys over the summer months! While we won’t be in your earbuds talking about motherhood and the gospel, you can still have these conversations with women in your local church or community. How can you share gospel hope with moms this summer? (Think: play dates, prayer groups, coffee walks, playground picnics)
